WESTWORLD Writer Gina Atwater in development Adaptation of the RAYBEARER fantasy novel series – GeekTyrant

Gina Atwater, who has worked on projects such as Westworld and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has entered into a multi-year global deal with Netflix and is set to develop a serial adaptation of the West African-inspired fantasy novel YA Raybearer written by Jordan Ifueko.

For those of you unfamiliar with the story, here’s the description:

Nothing is more important than loyalty. But what if you swore to protect the one you were born to destroy?

Tarisai has always dreamed of the warmth of a family. She was raised in isolation by a mysterious, often absent mother known only as The Lady. The Lady sends him to the capital of Aritsar’s world empire to compete with other children to be chosen as one of the 11 Councils of the Crown Prince. If chosen, she will be joined with the other Council members by the Ray, a connection deeper than blood. This closeness is irresistible for Tarisai, who has always wanted to belong to somewhere. But the Lady has other ideas, including a magical wish that Tarisai is forced to obey: kill the crown prince once she earns his trust. Tarisai won’t stay there and become someone’s pawn, but is she strong enough to choose a different path for herself? With extraordinary world-building and breathtaking prose, Raybearer is the story of loyalty, fate and the effort we are willing to make for those we love.

Atwater will also create, produce, direct and write other new shows for Netflix “that will put traditionally under-represented characters at the forefront of the narrative.”

Matt Thunell, Netflix’s vice president of global agreements, said in a statement, “Gina is a triple threat as a writer, director and producer and we are thrilled to be working with her. Her experiences in creating fearless and focused work about characters in complex fantasy worlds make her the perfect writer to face the world of “Raybearer”.

Atwater added, “It is an absolute privilege to join the Netflix family! I’m grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with a company that shares my passion for pursuing bold and innovative stories that give underrepresented characters a place to shine in the prestigious space.

Raybearer is in the early stages of development at Netflix and hails from Sugar23 and Macro Television Studios.
