With Demon Slayer: Mugen Train and My Hero Academia: Mission of the Heroes of the World Dominating the Japanese box office when they are released, it is clear that there is a strong demand for animated films. Apparently this extends to live-action adaptations as well, since Tokyo Avengers recently became the highest-grossing live-action film of 2021 in Japan. The film’s success bodes well for future live-action adaptations – and the possibility of a sequel.
Live-action movie adapts Ken Wakui’s manga
The live adaptation of Tokyo Avengers is based on the manga series of the same name by Ken Wakui. Wakui’s story has also been turned into an anime, which premiered in the spring of 2021. Fans are eagerly hoping for a second season of the Tokyo Avengers anime, but the film kept them busy in the meantime.
Tokyo Avengers follows a young man named Takemichi Hanagaki (played by Takumi Kitamura in the live-action movie), who finds himself sent back in time after being hit by a train. On his trip down memory lane, he chooses to save his ex-girlfriend from a tragic fate at the hands of the Mafia.
The manga is one of the best-selling series in Japan, being among the favorites as Demon slayer and Jujutsu kaisen. The anime was equally well received, as was the live-action movie. Indeed, the latter reached an impressive milestone in September.
“Tokyo Revengers” is the highest grossing film of 2021 in Japan
According to a September 27 announcement from Crunchyroll, Tokyo Avengers became Japan’s highest-grossing live-action film of 2021 on its 12th weekend in theaters. The adaptation has grossed 4.38 billion yen, or US $ 39.42 million since its inception. He even exceeded Rurouni Kenshin: the final, which previously held the title.
Tokyo Avengers also had a good release weekend in Japan, grossing 528 million yen (US $ 4.78 million). It was released in July and climbed to the top of the domestic box office, beating both Godzilla vs. Kong and Black Widow.
The film’s success could pave the way for more live action Tokyo Avengers content – and maybe even a sequel.
Could live-action “Tokyo Revengers” have a sequel?

Fans would love to see Tokyo Avengers Season 2, but apparently a live-action sequel could also be on the table. In a discussion with Cinema Today, producer Shota Okada suggested the possibility of a fan-driven sequel, as well as the film’s success:
“How far this story can go depends on the voice of each of our fans. With an impetus like “We’re going as far as we can!” », We are counting on your continued support! “
Obviously, moviegoers have come out to show their support over the past several months. And they might have some good news, because Tokyo Avengers will share a surprise ad in the next issue of Weekly Shounen Magazine. Twitter Manga user Mogura reported the news, and while it has yet to be confirmed by official sources, it marks the latest milestone for the live-action movie.
Fans will have to wait until October 6 to see if Tokyo Avengers gets the green light for another live-action feature – or a second season. The demand certainly seems to be there. Hopefully the creators will answer them.
