She-Hulk’s Head Writer Didn’t Believe He’d Get Charlie Cox

The daredevil the renaissance is in full swing. Since his much talked about cameo in Spider-Man: No Coming Home Last year, Charlie Cox’s MCU return was the subject of endless rumors and speculation. But luckily, his next appearance is a lot closer than we thought. Last weekend She-Hulk: Lawyer The trailer ended with Cox’s familiar horned figure of the blind superhero falling on top of Jennifer Walters. Unfortunately, the scene was cut before we could get a good look at his face. But speaking with She-Hulk Head Writer and Executive Producer Jessica Gao, Collider was able to confirm that Cox would indeed be returning as the Man Without Fear in the upcoming series.

Netflix memorably removed its daredevil series in 2018. However, Marvel couldn’t begin planning for Cox’s return until 2020 at the earliest due to a clause in their Netflix deal. Once that hurdle was cleared, associating his character with She-Hulk seemed like a no-brainer. After all, both Matt and Jen are lawyers in the Marvel Comics Universe. Either way, Gao wasn’t always sure the studio would approve.

“I don’t think we ever in a million years thought we would be allowed to use them,” Gao said. “Because we didn’t know what the status of the character was. And then, I can’t remember how, we got wind that he was coming back and it was Charlie Cox, and we were like, ‘Wait, does that mean we can use him? ? Are we allowed? And when they told us yes, I mean, we couldn’t believe it, we thought we were being pranked.

“We just kept writing to him,” Gao continued. “And we kept rolling with the story thinking like, ‘Okay, anytime now they’re going to tell us we can’t use them. They made a mistake. In fact, they don’t have the rights. But it just kept [becoming] more and more real. And it was so hard to keep this secret!

Beyond She-Hulk, Marvel has much bigger plans for the character of Cox. Cox will also lend his voice to the studio’s next film. Spider-Man: Year One animated series. But on the live-action side, Cox will also return for Marvel’s Echo as well as a new series of 18 episodes, Daredevil: Born Again. The final two shows will reunite Cox with his daredevil co-stars Vincent D’Onofrio, aka Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.

She-Hulk: Lawyer will premiere on Disney+ on August 17.
