New WWII Captain America series could add new depth to Scarlet Witch’s family tree

Return to the frontlines of WWII with Captain America and Bucky in the upcoming original graphic novel Captain America: The Ghost Army. The OGN is published by Scholastic’s Graphix, as part of a OGN Marvel range launched in 2020. The story is written by novelist YA Alan Gratz, with art from veteran Marvel Brent Schoonover.

Captain America: The Ghost Army is a WWII story set in Marvel U, with Cap and Bucky facing off against an army of undead soldiers from their current war and past wars. They are reeling from the conflict in the eastern European country of Transylvania, just as Baron Mordo watches it all unfold from Mount Wundagore, just south of the legendary Eastern European nation.

Graphix shared two Brent Schoonover character sketches for Captain America: The Ghost Army, new characters Andrei Maximoff and Nikolai Baskerville:

Andrei is a villager in the Transylvanian town where Captain America and Bucky take refuge from the titular Phantom Army, but there’s more to it. Judging by his last name (Maximoff) and location (Transylvania) and the fact that there are few coincidences in Marvel Comics, Andrei Maximoff could be related to Wanda and Pietro Maximoff (AKA the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver) .

Then things get really interesting – Maximoff is the last name on the material side of Wanda and Pietro’s lineage. Readers have already met their mother, Natayla Maximoff, in the 2016 Scarlet Witch series (she also revealed herself called Scarlet Witch). But her father – Wanda and Pietro’s grandfather – was called Scarlet Warlock, and we don’t know his real name.

Could Andrei Maximoff be the Scarlet Wizard?

Meanwhile, Nikolai Baskerville is in the allied military forces with Captain America and Bucky.

Alan Gratz is a popular novelist with YA hits such as Ground Zero, Refugee, and WWII Allies. He’s a frequent face at Dragon Con, and according to his website her dream job besides writing would be drawing comics.

Captain America drawing; The Phantom Army will be Brent Schoonover, who drew Astonishing Ant-Man, Howling Commandos of SHIELD and Captain Marvel, and the recent series owned by creator Devil’s Highway.

Captain America; The Ghost Army OGN goes on sale August 2, 2022.
