Japan Box Office: Sumikko Gurashi 2nd film remained in the top 10 for 7 consecutive weeks

There was only one Japanese animated film in the Top 10 last weekend. Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahou no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: A Magical Child From The Blue Night In The Moonlight), the second animated feature film inspired by the popular mascot brand of Japanese stationery company San-X, still ranked eighth in its seventh weekend.

Although it fell three spots from last week, its box office record ultimately surpassed 1 billion yen ($ 8.8 million), or 74% of the first film’s domestic gross total. Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tobidasu Ehon to Himitsu no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: A Vivid Picture Book & Secret Child) released in November 2019.

Meanwhile, after remaining in the top 10 for seven straight weeks, Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night, the first part of the animated feature film project based on the reboot series that tells the first arc of the original Sword art online series of novels by Reki Kawahara, finally comes out of the top 10. The second part should be released in Japan in the course of 2022.

The adaptation of the live feature film by Fumi Yoshinaga (Old Bakery, Ooku: the interior rooms) Kinou Nani Tabeta? / What did you eat yesterday? also dropped from the top 10 on his seventh weekend. The film earned 1.32 billion yen (US $ 11.61 million) to become the 17th highest-grossing Japanese film of this year so far.

No new Japanese animated films were released this past weekend.
