James Patterson and Maxine Paetro’s “21st Birthday”

Writers James Patterson and Maxine Paetro are back with a new installment of their popular Women’s Murder Club series. Book # 21 titled “21st Birthday” follows Sergeant Lindsay Boxer, who pledges to protect a 20-year-old victim before her 21st birthday.

“21st Birthday” brings together four strong and determined women – journalist Cindy Thomas, SFPD Sergeant Lindsay Boxer, Chief Medical Examiner Claire Washburn and Assistant District Attorney Yuki Castellano – to solve another case in their women’s murder club. A distraught old woman begs Cindy to help her find her missing 20-year-old daughter Tara and granddaughter Lorrie. The old woman believes that it is Tara’s husband, Lucas Burke, who is behind their disappearance. In order to help them, Cindy calls on her friend and Sergeant Lindsay for the investigation. Lindsay discovers that Lucas does not have a criminal record and in his defense, he has an alibi. But when baby Lorrie, Tara, and a few other corpses begin to appear, Lucas is arrested. During the investigation, Lucas has a big revelation that may change the course of the investigation. Meanwhile, Chief Medical Examiner Claire’s theories behind the murders clash with the police version of the case. And so, when the case goes to trial, the Deputy District Attorney, Yuki, tries to follow the rules of the book for sentencing. Meanwhile, Lindsay races against time to find out who the real killer is.

The Women’s Murder Club series has stood the test of time for a reason. In this book, the four strong women come together to solve another murder mystery using their individual skills. Although this is Volume 21 of the popular series, the novel can also be read on its own. With short chapters and quick writing, “21st Birthday” is a quick read that fans of the Women’s Murder Club series might want to add to their playlist.
