Netflix’s “Bridgerton” is a romantic drama set during the Regency era that follows the lives of three London families: the Bridgertons, the Featheringtons and the Bassets. Based on the novel series of the same name by Julia Quinn, the romantic drama was created by Chris Van Dusen. With an vibe that can be accurately described as early 19th century ‘Gossip Girl’, ‘Bridgerton’ was an immediate hit when released on December 25, 2020.
The show was critically acclaimed, with its elaborate costumes, realistic sets and swooning characters, earning 12 Emmy nominations. With an intense twist marking the end of Season 1, fans have been eagerly awaiting the fate of their beloved Bridgertons. Well here’s everything we know about ‘Bridgerton’ Season 2!
Bridgerton Season 2 release date
Season 1 of “Bridgerton” was released in full on December 25, 2020 on Netflix. The first season consists of eight episodes lasting 57 to 72 minutes each.
Following its positive ratings and growing popularity, Netflix officially renewed “Bridgerton” for a second season on January 21, 2021. Filming for Season 2 began in Spring 2021 in the UK. Additionally, Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington, revealed that several important scenes are being filmed in September 2021, which implies that despite COVID-19 and roadblocks linked to permits, the production of season 2 is still in full swing.
Filming for the first season lasted almost nine months, ending just before the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc around the world. Based on the aforementioned factors and keeping in mind post-production and pandemic-related delays, we might see Season 2 in early or mid-2022. If things go as planned, Season 2 of ‘Bridgerton’ will most likely air during the first quarter of 2022 or no later than the second quarter of 2022.
To the delight of its fans, the show has already been renewed also for seasons 3 and 4. However, this is not surprising as the inaugural season of “Bridgerton” is Netflix’s most watched show with 82 million viewers. Additionally, a spin-off centered around a young Queen Charlotte is also in the works, the expansion of the Bridgerton universe.
Bridgerton Season 2 Cast: Who Can Take Part?
Most of the main cast will reprise their roles in Season 2. Returning cast members include Jonathan Bailey as Viscount Anthony Bridgerton, Phoebe Dynevor as Daphe Bridgerton Basset, Golda Rosheuvel as Queen Charlotte , Luke Thompson as Benedict Bridgerton, Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton, Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton, Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Featherington, Florence Hunt as Hyacinth Bridgerton, Ruth Gemmell as Lady Violet Bridgerton, Ruby Barker as Marina Thompson, Polly Walker as Lady Portia Featherington, Bessie Carter as Prudence Featherington and Harriet Cains as Philipa Featherington.
A host of new cast members will also be added to this original lineup. Simone Ashley (of ‘Sex Education’ fame) will play Kate Sharma; Anthony’s romantic interest, while Shelley Conn will play her mother, Lady Mary, and Charithra Chandran will play Kate’s younger sister, Edwina. Kate, from a new Indian family in London, is set to take Anthony’s world by storm, and we can’t wait to see how their relationship unfolds. Additionally, Rupert Evans will play the late Edmund Bridgerton, so we can expect a few flashback scenes.
However, fan favorite Regé-Jean Page, who appears as the tall, dark and handsome Simon Basset, do not come back for season 2 as her character arc ends in season 1. “It helps to complete those arcs and hold the landing”, declared Page to Variety, adding that he is excited about the season ahead, however. While this Duke of Hastings will be sorely missed, we can’t wait to see what his wife Daphne’s family will do in Season 2. Additionally, Ben Miller won’t be returning in Season 2 as a character either, the patriarch of the Featherington family. Baron Featherington is killed in the Season 1 finale.
Bridgerton Season 2 Plot: What Is It About?
Season 1 follows the lavish love lives and passionate ups and downs of the Bridgertons, Bassets and Featheringtons as they face London’s social season – all as Lady Whistledown watches with a keen eye. With an arranged marriage turned love affair, royal encounters, a surprise pregnancy, a partially unplanned pregnancy, several heartaches and duels between best friends, the first season offers top-notch entertainment. The finale sees a happy marriage for Daphne and Simon, who can’t wait to live with their newborn son. However, one major twist that has made all viewers gasp is the revelation that Penelope is Lady Whistledown.
The second novel in Quinn’s series, “The Viscount Who Loved Me,” is a good indicator of what lies ahead, as it is the source for the coming season. Season 2 will follow the love life of Anthony Bridgerton, Featherington’s older brother, who is constantly grappling with his family duties and personal desires. His sisters Daphne and Eloise would help him navigate the social terrain of London’s upper class as head of the Bridgerton family. Most importantly, he will look for a suitable wife.
Although Anthony will initially see Edwina Sharma as his equal, we are aware that his older sister Kate will steal the show and his heart. Of course, we still expect things to turn a bit awry, given Anthony’s heartbreak in Season 1. We’ll also see how Eloise handles Penelope’s secret identity as a gossip columnist. However, Coughlan revealed in an interview that Eloise is definitely going to be “pissed off”. We can also get a glimpse into the life of artistic rebel Benedict and the benevolent life of Colin, although these can be reserved for seasons 3 and 4.
Bridgerton’s second season is expected to be hotter and more dramatic than the last. He will deepen the pressures and powers of London’s social season and, of course, the dramatic encounters of the Bridgertons. We can’t wait to watch it all!
